This has been a long time coming. For years I would complain about my disposable razors and how they didn’t handle hair removal properly (but, boy, were they crackerjack at cutting into your skin or slicing straight through your nails.) On top of doing a shoddy job, they are overpriced, they don’t last long, and they create a ton of waste.
I never had brand loyalty when it came to disposables. I’d usually just opt for whatever was on sale at the time; however, I definitely made sure to stay far away from the super-cheap bulk bag of single-blade throwaways. I’d say the two that I bounced between the most throughout the course of my shaving career have been the Gillette Venus and the Bic Soleil.
My husband would constantly mention that I should give safety razors a try. He has been using his for over a decade now and never looked back. I admit: I think it looks cool. There’s this inherent hipness to something having its own paraphernalia and culture.
Recently I was nearing the end of my last pack of Bic Soleils and I just said, “This is it. I’m going to do it.” I watched a few videos of women using different safety razors to see what the general consensus was – favorable, it seemed – and I dove onto the Internet to find myself a cute one.
After some debate, I ended up going with the rainbow-colored Weishi with the butterfly open long handle. It is BEAUTIFUL. I went in thinking I would get a rose gold one, because I’m a sucker for that sort of thing, but when I saw this one I knew it was it. There is also something to be said for Japanese products. They are well-constructed and built to last, simple and they get the job done.
So this is where we’re starting from. I have absolutely ZERO experience with safety razors. Truth be told, the blades kind of scare me. I’m a little apprehensive, but I’m also very excited, hoping that this will work out in the end and I won’t just shred myself to ribbons. I expect maybe there will be a learning curve, but that’s okay.
On top of my razor, I also got a multipack of blades to try – because how could I possibly choose when there are a million kinds out there? So I’m going to be documenting the differences of each one, which ones work and which ones are awful.
At the end of the day, I feel this will be more cost effective, less wasteful, and maybe I’ll be smoother and less scarred because of it.
